Ash Mountain Rx (Prescribed Fire)

The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Fire Management Program will be conducting a fuel reduction project this year in the Ash Mountain area of Sequoia National Park. The project is reducing the number of acres traditionally burned and using more mechanical methods to achieve park goals because of drought conditions.The total acreage expected to be treated are 10 acres through prescribed burning and 15 acres through mechanical methods – totaling 25 acres. The intent of the project is to increase protection to park infrastructure and for visitor safety by creating more defensible space.Weather and air quality conditions permitting, prescribed burning days are planned for the window of May 31st – June 10th, 2015.“This project gives the Ash Mountain area a solid anchor point to aid in wildland fire suppression activities at a high volume visited location,” stated William Bayse, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Fuels Management Specialist.Impacts to visitors are…
