CA Attorney General Kamala Harris Honors Valley Law Enforcement Officers

California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris stopped off in Clovis Thursday to honor several police and C.H.P. officers.  It was part of the annual Peace Officer Commendation Award ceremony.  This year, it  took place inside the Clovis Veteran’s Memorial.

Harris says some of the best police work in the country is happening in the Central Valley.

High honors Thursday for valley law enforcement, as nine police and CHP officers received awards Thursday from Attorney General Kamala Harris for going above and beyond in tough situations.

CHP officer Aaron Keller was recognized for saving a woman from taking her own life.

"I don’t think it’s necessary, but it is nice to be recognized for your efforts," says officer Keller.

It’s a welcomed pat on the back at a time when law enforcement across the nation are being scrutinized and criticized.  Harris says the focus should be on the good, so she highlighted Kings County for it’s work on keeping youth out of jail and the Fresno Police Department for it’s commitment to community oriented policing.  Just recently, a Washington Post article also commended Fresno for it’s focus on building trust.

"They’ve been doing the work of engaging community, of respecting community and again, they’re one of the models for the country," says Harris.

Sheriff’s deputies were not included in the award ceremony, but Sheriff Margaret Mims still hosted the event.  She says no matter which branch, all law enforcement work toward a common goal.

Sheriff Margaret Mims says, "We work hard at it everyday with the idea that it’s a public service and we’re proud to do it."

Harris commented on a recent report that claimed resident’s of Fresno feel the least safe of any city in the nation, saying her reply was that in order to build trust, it takes two; both the police and the community.
