Crackdown has begun on drunk drivers

As Memorial Day Weekend begins law enforcement agencies from our area and around the state have started their crackdown on drunk drivers.

The Fresno Police Department opened up a DUI checkpoint Friday night in an attempt to remove drunk drivers from city streets.

At about 9 o’clock police officers were setting up traffic cones at about 9 o’clock Friday night.

Officers spent hours waiving cars through this one lane and looking for signs of drunk driving. The officers say checkpoints are an important tool for getting drunk drivers off the roads, but they say the ramped up enforcement this holiday weekend extends beyond just checkpoints.

"I like to tell people just because we’re on a street one direction one street in the city of Fresno don’t forget there are search and find motors out there. We also enlist the publics help. We like to remind them to be our eyes and ears and if you see a drunk driver call 911," said Sgt. Richard Tucker of the Fresno Police Department.

More DUI checkpoints are planned through the holiday weekend.
