Deputies Receive Award of Valor 2014

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is honored to announce two of our own as Medal of Valor Award recipients.
Sergeant Kimberly Miller and Deputy Justin Sturrn were selected by the California State Firefighters’ Association (CSFA) Historical Society, as recipients of the award of Valor.
due to their courageous actions during a fiery crash.
This Award provides public recognition to individuals who have unselfishly provided their personal support to their fellow citizen.
They believe that when a person places their own life in jeopardy to save that of another, their actions should be rewarded.
Kimberly Miller and Justin Sturrn traveled to Sacramento.
were recognized and presented with this prestigious award during an extremely moving and emotional evening.
First-hand accounts of bravery and heroism shown by the recipients were shared with all those in attendance.
In the afternoon of May 14th 2013.
Kimberly and Justin arrived on scene to a motor vehicle accident.
The vehicle was over an embankment, several explosions were heard and the vehicle was on fire.
Kimberly and Justin were advised by CHP that a man was located outside the vehicle lying in the grass.
CHP Officers moved the ejected driver away from the burning vehicle.
The fire was beginning to spread to the vegetation around the vehicle.
Kimberly Justin and two CHP Officers reached the man, soon they were all surrounded by fire and the vehicle was still exploding.

The four were able to ‘stomp’ out a section of the fire and carry the unconscious man
away from the fire danger.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office stands behind this distinguished award and the actions taken by all those involved in this accident.
