Drought: Homeowners Building Pools Ahead of Potential Ban

Homeowners are deciding to build pools now before any potential bans are put in place on construction.

Some communities across the state have already passed water restrictions for swimming pools. The Town of Coalinga established a ban on new pool construction at one point and there’s also a ban in Montecito near Santa Barbara.

Family owned Vineyard Pools is being flooded with calls from families who are ready to build.

Ben Bogdanof Vineyard Pools 16:26 "We’re just ready to do every pool we can. Right now you just can’t keep up, you can’t meet with everyone. You’re trying to do the best you can," said Ben Bogdanof co-owner of Vineyard Pools.

Right now putting in a new pool means business is good, but the drought could present some problems.

"People really abuse what they put in the pool and drain it and that can really start adding up on the water if they aren’t maintained properly," said Bogdanof.

There isn’t a ban on the construction of pools in Fresno, or Clovis yet, but many people aren’t waiting to find out. They’re securing pool building permits now.

"This wasn’t my idea. I was kind of trying to retire, but my wife wants it for our daughter and her friends," said Bill Rios as he watches his new pool is Clovis start to take shape.

"I have a responsibility not to waste water," said Rios.

Pool companies claim if properly maintained an average pool uses less water per year than a lawn covering the same amount of space, but pool companies across California and the Central Valley fear conservationists may take aim at shutting down pools to save water.  It’s an industry that employs more than 50,000 people statewide.

"If you cut that off you’re cutting off a whole industry that is very vital I think to the valley," said Bogdanof.

Leaders in both Clovis and Fresno vow to monitor water usage and re-evaluate water restrictions if they feel it’s necessary.
