Locals Refuse to Let the Triple-Digit Heat Ruin Their Weekend

Triple-digit heat hit the Central Valley this weekend, forcing people to figure out ways to stay cool. A lot of folks tried their best to stay inside with air-conditioning, and if you were outside, you were probably ducking for the shade.

Andrew Camacho and his uncle Roy Quijano pushed on with their family barbeque at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday afternoon.

"And not let the heat deter us too much! Just trying to enjoy it, have some fun," said Camacho about the heat at the park.

The men and their families found relief in the shade, and in the deserted space.

Quijano explained, "Today no you can tell, parking lot is empty. The two cars out there, that’s about it. And normally when you come in, it’s packed, can’t find parking."

But for those who weren’t brave enough to be outside at the park, just up the street at Leilani Shave Ice, lines were formed for a cool dessert in the middle of the day.

Katie White is an employee at Leilani Shave Ice. She said, "It’s so refreshing. We sell so many different things here, we sell shaved ice, ice cream, pineapple and mango Dole whip."

White said business at both locations in Fresno is booming thanks to the heat. She said some customers at the Champlain and Perrin store have come in multiple times since Friday.

Jazmine Ramos stopped by for some shaved ice on Saturday. She said she had been staying cool by, "Literally just been inside my house like the whole time, this is my first time like coming out, and this is the first place I came!"

As people in the Valley continue to stay cool through the hot weather, the California Highway Patrol said on a serious note, during the heat, they remind drivers to always have water on them and never leave any children or pets in the car.
