Nunes Appointed Intelligence Chairman

A valley congressman has been appointed to a high profile position in the house of representatives.

Republican Devin Nunes was named chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

He was appointed by House Speaker John Boehner and among three Republican Congressmen vying for the chairmanship.

Nunes is the second congressman from the Central Valley to take a high profile position in Congress. Bakersfield’s Kevin McCarthy was elected House Majority Leader this summer. The two valley Republicans are allies. And both now poised to play key roles in the nation’s capitol.

From the Central Valley to Washington D.C., two valley Republicans are becoming power players in Congress.

Kevin McCarthy was elected House Majority Leader by his Republican peers this summer. And now Devin Nunes was chosen by House Speaker John Boehner to chair the House Intelligence Committee.

“It’s a humbling experience for anyone in Congress because you have to have the trust of all of your colleagues to oversee the seventeen intelligence committee agencies,” Nunes told us by phone.

Those agencies include the CIA, FBI, and National Security Agency.
The committee addresses issues like terrorist threats, surveillance, and how to protect the U.S. at home and abroad. And also our armed forces.

Nunes has served for four years on the House Intelligence Committee.

“It’s a big job with a lot of responsibility, because you need to be transparent and get good information out my colleagues and out to the public. But most importantly protecting and serving the men and women who are out in the field doing some very difficult work and making sure that we have their back,” Nunes said.

Nunes was elected to office in 2002. Shortly after we went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. He says he’s spent time overseas with our troops and plans to continue to do that.

“It’s good for the valley, it’s good for California to have someone not only on the committee but to serve as chairman, most notably because we’ve lost a lot of soldiers in my entire time in congress overseas,” Nunes said.

Nunes will take over as chair when the new Congress convenes.
