Selma police have identified those killed in Monday’s murder-suicide.

At a press conference Tuesday, Selma Police Chief Greg Garner identified the shooter as 36-year-old Eduardo Felix Escobar of Selma.

Police suspect him of killing his girlfriend of 19 years Giovanni Loza Cervantes and her cousin Jessica Emmanuel Cervantes.

One of the couple’s seven children, a 14-year-old girl, witnessed it all, and even tried to take the gun away from her dad, Garner said.

A preliminary toxicology report shows that Escobar was under the influence of meth, according to Garner.

Garner said that on Monday around 2:15 p.m., Escobar went to drop off his 14-year-old daughter with her mom at the home where she had been staying when the couple split.

"Sadly she (the daughter) witnessed the murder of her cousin in the front yard, she witnessed the murder of her mother inside the residence and witnessed her father take his own life," Garner said.

Police said the couple had been having problems, and the family was aware of them.

Outside the home Monday, Escobar argued with Jessica.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, was standing outside in her driveway and saw it happen.

"She (Jessica) was dialing the police, and he jumped out of the car so fast, that I thought he was going to go hit her or slap her or something, and I saw the gun on the side, and I just froze," the neighbor said.

Escobar fired several rounds at Jessica then fired a round at the front door where his daughter had been standing. Escobar then went in and shot Giovanni, Garner said.

"He then struggled over the gun with his daughter, who at the moment perceived that her father was about to shoot her," Garner said.

But instead, he turned the gun on himself, dying hours later.

Tuesday, neighbors were still in disbelief over the tragedy.

"We usually have our grandkids playing in the front. And for it to happen like at 2:15 in the afternoon, that’s even scarier–broad daylight, you know. So now, what do you do?" said Mary Torres, who lives across the street.

Tuesday evening, family and friends were at the crime scene as police continued their investigation.

One family member removed a truck that had been parked in the driveway with a bullet hole in the windshield.

Jessica was also a mother with at least one child, Garner said.

"It’s scary to know stuff like that goes on; especially being a mother, you think of your children. So there’s kids without a mother now–it’s heartbreaking, it’s sad," said neighbor Tiffany Fabela.

Garner said Escobar had a history of domestic violence and at the time of the shooting had a felony warrant out for his arrest for domestic-violence related charges.

The couple’s seven children are now with their grandparents, and CPS is figuring out where to place them, according to Garner.
