Slate Fire (Wildfire)

The Slate fire was detected Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at approx. 3:56 p.m. on the ridge top near the peak of Slate Mountain, on the Western Divide Ranger District, in Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument. Fire crews located the fire and found a single snag burning with approximately a half-acre of fire slowly burning on the ground around it. The fire was assessed by fire personnel inserted via helicopter, to evaluate the fire and surrounding area. Fire crews initially used a confine and contain strategy due to the rough terrain, and limited access to the fire. The fire will be managed to achieve multiple resource objectives. It is in a remote location, burning at a low intensity, and is in an area that has missed several fire return intervals. The fire is above and somewhat removed from the ongoing tree mortality due to the high elevation. As the fire burns downslope, it may burn into low to moderate tree mortality areas.
