Battle of the Badges drive dedicated to Pete Dern

Local law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel are competing to save lives in a yearly effort.

The 14th annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is going on this month. Firefighters, police, sheriff and other badge-carrying personnel will compete for bragging rights, and a trophy. The four-week battle will help ensure the valley has an ample blood supply.

This year’s drive is dedicated to Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern, who sustained critical injuries in a house fire in march.

"We’re continuing, and these people are continuing to help him by coming out and donating and just really challenging the community to come out and donate on his behalf," Dean Eller, from the Central California Blood Center, said.

The drive first began in 2002 for the Central California Blood Center. More than 22,000 people have signed up to donate blood to help patients in valley hospitals.
