Board Closes ACEL Chart School

Board members voted to close ACEL Charter High School Thursday due to financial trouble.

The school is $300,000 in debt.

Students protested Monday after being concerned about staff layoffs and the decision to cut the school lunch program.

The principal said Monday that students were misinformed and the school was not closing.

"I think it is just conversation and kids that are on edge because they believed erroneous information and they are responding to that rather than fact," Principal Stephen Morris said.

Now the big question is what happens to the 117 students who attend ACEL. Particularly the seniors set to graduate this year.

"The majority of us are seniors so we are more or less worried if we are going to graduate or not," ACEL Senior Alexander Estrada said Monday.

ACEL is an independent charter school authorized by the Fresno Unified School District. It has it’s own governing board and is known for its alternative teaching environment that focuses on project based learning.

"To me this school means a lot. My middle school years I was what you would say a bad student but when I started here I made a lot more friends it’s been a lot easier on me when it comes to school work," Estrada said.
