Community leaders rallied at Cornerstone Church in Fresno Thursday taking a stand against gang violence.

The mother of nine year old Janessa Ramirez retold the story of how her daughter died just 11 days ago. They were standing in front of a laundromat when they heard gunshots. Janessa was hit by a stray bullet.

"Then she grabbed my hand really tight and she goes Mommy, Mommy. And I go yes baby and she goes I love you. And she just closed her eyes and she was gone," Stacey Gonzales said.

Residents, faith leaders, city council members and law enforcement all gathered at Cornerstone Church.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says he has not experienced anything like the loss of Janessa in his career.

"Closing that casket on Saturday will be forever in my mind and it continue to cause me to burn with passion," Dyer said.

Dyer is committed to finding whoever is responsible for Janessa’s death.

Local leaders say stopping gang violence takes the work of the entire community. The show of support at the church Thursday is a huge step.

"The truth is no matter how many votes we take or how good a job Chief Dyer does and his crew policing our streets it takes much much more than that," Fresno City Councilman Steve Brandau said.

Gonzales says she has forgiven whoever took her daughters life. Now she is moving forward with the help of her faith.

"Let’s stop the violence. Let’s all come together as brothers and sisters in Christ, find Christ, find your peace and love and just help each other through everything," Gonzales said.
