Couple Looses Everything in Fire Before Thanksgiving

A Fresno couple is devastated after a fire destroyed everything they own just before Thanksgiving.

The fire started early Tuesday morning at a triplex on Washington Avenue in Central Fresno. The couple was sleeping when the blaze started. Joe Granado woke up to a noise that alerted him something was wrong.

"When I ran to the side of the gate there was a big fire up there then I ran back. She was asleep I took her out," Joe Granado said.

He says his first concern was getting his girlfriend of 15 years out safely. Lonnie is disabled and has trouble walking. Once she was safe he was able to go back inside and grab a few clothes. Everything else, including the food the purchased for Thanksgiving, is gone.

"We got the turkey, stuffing, mash potatoes and gravy. We walked all the way to this store right here because it was cheaper," Granado said.

While most families are thinking of their Thanksgiving feast. Joe and Lonnie are worried about where they are going to live. The Red Cross helped the couple with a hotel but they have to be out by Friday.

"The most important thing is a home. We can’t live out in the streets. From here where are we going to go," Granado said.

Firefighters say the cause of the blaze was electrical. The couple has reached out to everyone including their landlord for help. Although they are feeling down on their luck right before the holidays they are trying to stay positive.

"I don’t care about the stuff that got burned as long as we’re okay. That can be replaced," Granado said.

The couple is hoping that someone is willing to donate a Thanksgiving meal and turn their luck around. Anyone who would like to donate can call the Red Cross at (559) 455-1000 or call our newsroom to get in contact with them at (559) 225-1133.
