Family of Slain 9-year-old Pleads for Information

&quot;It could have been your niece, it could have been your child, but instead it was my niece, our child,&quot; said George Gonzales, great uncle of Janessa Ramirez. Ramirez was killed Sunday night by a stray bullet that police believe came from a shootout between gang members.<br /><br />Janessa’s family made a plea to the community Monday night to help find the people who shot and killed the innocent child.<br /><br />Police say they have few leads and no suspects.<br /><br />Janessa Ramirez was a fourth grader at Steinbeck Elementary School. <br /><br />She was with her mother in front of a laundromat Sunday night at Marks and Clinton in West Central Fresno.<br /><br />Her family and police are pleading for witnesses to come forward. Or anyone who knows who killed Janessa to give that information to police.<br /><br />The family met at their church Monday night, in this time of grief, to ask for the community to help.<br /><br />Janessa’s mother was comforted by family and friends. They gathered at the church in southeast Fresno to remember, to pray, and to ask for help to find Janessa’s killer.<br /><br />&quot;We ask the community open your eyes, open your hearts, we’re asking the community this could be your child, your granddaughter, your niece,&quot; George Gonzales said.<br /><br />Gonzales says the family is united in this time of grief to find the person who shot Janessa.<br /><br />&quot;They took my little great-niece away from us, her mother, her grandmother, my mother, her great great-grandmother, community please help us,&quot; Gonzales said.<br /><br />Around 8:30 Sunday night, Janessa and her mother went to the store to cash in lottery tickets. They saw friends at the laundromat a couple of doors dow and walked over to talked to them. Janessa’s mother heard two volleys of gunfire. Then Janessa told her mother her stomach was burning, and she collapsed. <br /><br />Police believe that the bullet that hit Janessa came from a gunfight between gang members about 300 yards away.<br /><br />&quot;Not only am I asking any witnesses to come forward, I’m asking for those individuals that were involved in the shooting to do the responsible thing and come forward and provide whatever information. I don’t expect them to do that because they’re cowards. But I would expect good citizens in the city to come forward with information that will helps us to solve this case,&quot; Fresno police chief Jerry Dyer said during a Monday morning press conference.<br /><br />Police are looking at surveillance video from businesses in the area. Witnesses saw a black car and a white car speed away from the scene. But no description of suspects.<br /><br />Those who knew Janessa say she didn’t deserve this. No child does.<br /><br />&quot;This little girl, she was just so good. She was a good little girl,&quot; Nancy Alejandrez said. She had Janessa in day care, and is a family friend.<br /><br />There is a five thousand dollar reward in this case that leads to an arrest.<br /><br />The reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers.
