Fisherman rescued from San Joaquin River

A man is recovering after being pulled out of the San Joaquin River in Northwest Fresno.

Police say the 40-year-old man had been fishing on the ledge when it gave way.

He called 9-1-1 while holding onto branches, before drifting down stream.

Officers found him, still breathing on his own but said he was unresponsive.

Once rescuers got him out of the water, they had to carry him about 400 yards up a steep cliff to the ambulance.

He has since been released from the hospital.
