Fresno Teen Sentenced to 17 Years for Home Invasion Robbery, Beating of 93-Year-Old WWII Vet

Dezman Kenner of Fresno was sentenced Friday to 17 years in prison for the violent home invasion robbery and beating of a WWII veteran.

Kenner is now 18-years-old but was 16 when he and two juvenile accomplices broke in to the home of 93-year-old Josef Martin in October 2013.

"They got away easy. Seventeen years is nothing. It will go by. They didn’t kill me, but they’ll kill the next person," Martin said reacting to Friday’s sentencing.

Martin last faced Kenner in court to testify, reliving the nightmare.

At the time of the crime, Martin showed his home where Kenner, along with 15- and 12-year-old boys, surprised him in his sleep, put a gun in his mouth, and shoved him in a closet while they robbed him.

"When they put me in the closet, they hurt my legs. They hurt me all over. They ruined my life," Martin said.

It’s difficult for Martin to get over it. But his family and friends are helping him day by day.

Friday, his caretaker took Martin to Woodlake to visit his mother’s grave and his old high school where he got to take home a picture of his 1941 graduating class.

Distractions like this help keep his mind off the most terrifying experience of his life.

"I fought for freedom. I come home and what do I do for freedom? This guy beating me up," Martin said.

Even with a severe punishment for one of the attackers, Martin is still angry.

What’s most frightening to him is the young age of the perpetrators.

"I’m hurt and I’m bitter. These kinds of crimes have got to stop–these young kids with guns and all that," Martin said.

The 12-year-old involved has been sentenced to a year in juvenile hall while the 15-year-old will be sentenced later this month.
