Lexus Slams Into Tanker, One Airlifted with Major Injuries

One person sustained major injuries in a crash involving a tanker and a Lexus sedan Thursday morning.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Fowler and Conejo Avenues.

A home at the intersection has a surveillance video camera that points to traffic and captured the crash.

It shows a tanker loaded with gasoline driving northbound on Fowler Avenue where there is no stop sign.

The white Lexus, heading eastbound on Conejo Avenue, fails to stop for the stop sign.

The video shows the Lexus slamming into the side of the tanker.

The driver of the Lexus was not wearing a seat belt, according to Sgt. Ron Dechamplain with the Fresno area CHP. That driver, who has only been identified as a white male in his 60s, has major injuries. He was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center.

Both the passenger of the Lexus and the driver of the tanker sustained some injuries with the extent of their injuries unknown. But they were both responsive at the time and were taken to the hospital, Dechamplain said.

The CHP is investigating, and they have surveillance video to help them out.

"They have a camera that captures traffic going through the intersection, so the cause of the accident is pretty cut and dry," Dechamplain said.'

"Crews were also worried and concerned because gas and diesel were leaking from the tractor trailer that were involved in the accident," said Capt. Ryan Michaels with Fresno County Cal Fire.

Michaels said it could’ve been much worse. Anytime there’s gasoline and diesel involved in a crash near ignition sources, there is the potential for an explosion. Fortunately, that did not happen.

The CHP is investigating to determine whether the driver of the Lexus was under the influence of anything or driving distracted.
