Local Favorite Silver Dollar Hofbrau Closes After 35 Years

It’s the end of an era for a local favorite. The Silver Dollar Hofbrau located on Shaw just off Hwy 41 in Fresno has been sold.

The current management had owned it for the last 35 years, and Tuesday night they closed their doors.

Owner Truman Campbell, 87, said the hofbrau had a good run over the years but it was time to close the doors.

Management made the announcement public only a few hours before closing on their Facebook page.

The hofbrau was an iconic establishment for customers, like April Robinson, who’ve made regular visits a part of their lives.

"Gosh, at least once or twice a week, whether it’s for lunch or dinner or to have a drink or something," Robinson said.

Campbell said at its peak, the hofbrau was the place to be.

He staffed about 50 employees at one point, but it was now down to about 15.

Over the years, Campbell said business had also gradually declined.

General manager Jeannie Wright had called the hofbrau home for about 30 years.

"Part of my heart is closing," Wright said. "And it’s hard. It’s bitter sweet."

It wasn’t only the good food and drinks that attracted customers. Nightly attractions like Tuesday jazz nights brought in the crowds.

"I had a lot of emotions. Obviously I’m going to miss this place–it’s amazing," said Mark Unzueta, a bartender who had worked there for about three years. "It’s like a second home for me–come into work, see familiar faces, and it’s kind of like a ‘Cheers’ atmosphere."

The future of the building itself is unclear. But employees and customers hope the new owner will preserve the interior beauty and history of the building.

"It’s sad. We have a lot of memories here–a great many memories here," Robinson said.

There is no word yet on what the new owner plans to do with the building.
