Protests continue in the wake of decisions in Ferguson, Missouri and New York not to indict white police officers in the deaths of black men. A Fresno pastor held a peaceful protest on Sunday afternoon in Downtown Fresno at the corner of Fresno and C streets. A group of about twenty gathered and laid in the middle of the street to voice their frustrations about the recent deaths.
Standing on what New Life Church of God’s Reverend Floyd D. Harris Jr. calls "injustice corner", located on Fresno St. and C St., for many, was an opportunity for change.

Local protestors Joaquin Diaz DeLeon said, "If we don’t do it now, it’ll never happen. And my kids and your kids will go through the same drama."

DeLeon calls that "drama" the recent divide between police officers and minorities in the community.

He said, "There’s no excuse that law enforcement who serve the people by our dollars that we work for, as you work for too, to not be held accountable."

Church leaders like Harris said when there is no justice, there is no peace. Local protesters have even demonstrated their frustrations by blocking traffic on Blackstone Avenue friday night.

"The violence is the police, that’s who’s violent. Don’t put the violence on us," exclaimed Harris.

But Jacky Parks, the president of the Fresno Police Officers Association said all the scrutiny is not fair.

Parks said, "I think most officers aren’t afraid to say it, I mean, we’re scared too."

Parks says what dictates a police officer’s behavior is the the action of the person they’re contacting.

"The number one thing that you’re worried about is being safe, keeping our community safe, and getting back home to your family," said Parks.

Parks said if officers are in a confrontation or attempting an arrest, the goal is to use the least amount of force necessary. Now being a time for understanding from both sides.
