Merced leaders preach basic but important skill to elementary students

Local leaders and community members on Friday made sure kids at Chenoweth Elementary School knew that reading and writing were important.

The school celebrated International Literacy Day Friday, harping on the theme of "Literacy in a Digital World," according to a Merced City School District news release.

Merced Mayor Mike Murphy, Merced College President Chris Vitelli, a police officer, firefighter and opera singer read to a number of classrooms and spoke on the importance of literacy throughout Friday, the release states.

Some teachers and students did their part by dressing up as their favorite storybook characters, from "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to the "Mad Hatter."

"We are grateful to all of the community members who took time to help instill a love of reading in our students in honor of International Literacy Day," Superintendent RoseMary Parga Duran said. "We hope parents will continue these lessons at home by reading with their children or encouraging them to read on their own at least 20 minutes each day."
