Pharmacies Burglarized for Codeine Cough Syrup

Pharmacies in Fresno targeted by thieves. And police are asking for your help to identify the suspects.

The series of break-ins in Northeast Fresno started in late September. Five pharmacies have been hit, some more than once. And the thieves are going for one thing: prescription cough syrup.

Take a look at these faces. Suspects wanted for a burglary at the Pill Box Pharmacy in Northeast Fresno. The thieves took cough syrup with codeine. When mixed with alcohol it can have a euphoric or hallucinogenic effect.

There have been nine different pharmacy break-ins since September.

"The suspects have a very similar method of operation. Using a rock or something to smash out the front window go inside then take again a codeine based cough syrup," said Fresno Police Lieutenant Don Gross.

One of the break-ins was caught on security video at the Care RX Pharmacy on Bullard near Fresno Street. It was burglarized twice in four days. Each time, the thieves took codeine cough syrup.

"It’s basically a street drug, a narcotic," said Randy Asai, owner of Ray Fisher Pharmacy.

Asai says he keeps codeine and other similar products locked up in the back of his pharmacy.

"They’re usually filled in the back area. And for us in particular our controlled substances are always locked up in a secure safe-type container so we don’t have to worry about it at night for somebody breaking in and trying to rob it," Asai said.

Police think the suspects could be stealing the codeine cough syrup to sell it.

"Because this is just too sophisticated, it’s a little too consistent than what we see from just somebody who is an addict to feed their own addiction." Gross said.

If you recognize the suspects, contact detective Rudy Montya at (559) 621-6436 or Rudy.Montoya@fresno.gov. Or call Crime Stoppers at 498-STOP. You could be eligible for a reward of up to a thousand dollars and you will remain anonymous.
