Pregnant Merced Teen Victim of Gang Shooting

Merced police are investigating the latest shooting that left two 17-year- olds in the hospital, including an expecting mother.&nbsp; It’s the latest act of violence in Merced and police say it appears gun violence is on the rise.<br /><br /> Police are still searching for the suspect they believe to be involved in the shooting last night; the person they say shot a pregnant teenager. Merced has been no stranger to crime lately, but this time residents say it’s gone too far.<br /><br /> Guns and gangs are overtaking the streets of Merced. Four bullet holes are the latest signs of violence and the victim is a 17-year-old girl who is 8 months pregnant.<br /><br /> The victim’s cousin says, &quot;I am heartbroken because it’s my family.&quot;<br /><br /> The victim’s cousin didn’t want to disclose his identity, but he says the teen is expecting a baby girl next month.&nbsp; He says Thursday night, she and her boyfriend – who is also 17 -&nbsp; were sitting in front of their home on Martin Luther King Jr Ave. when they were both shot. The boy was struck in his chest and the girl in her cheek.<br /><br /> Victim’s cousin says, &quot;It’s hard because she’s pregnant, too. That’s rude. There’s no respect, no respect around here.&quot;<br /><br /> Police say they believe only one shooter was involved and that the shooting appears to be gang-related.&nbsp;&nbsp; They also say the male victim has been in trouble with the law before.<br /><br /> Lieutenant Tom Trindad with the Merced Police Department says, &quot;We don’t know if they were the intended targets or not. They quite possibly could have been.&quot;<br /><br /> This latest shooting is just one in a string of recent shootings and coming off of the deadliest year in Merced’s history. City council members are now being urged to hire more police officers, while community members say they’re concerned for their own safety.<br /><br /> Merced resident Rick wright says, &quot;It’s a travesty and I think all the churches here in Merced should begin to pray for their own city.&quot;<br /><br /> Police say the pregnant teen and her baby are doing well and are thankfully going to be okay.&nbsp; The male victim did undergo surgery, but he is expected to survive. </div>
