Sondergaard Smittcamp Sworn in as Fresno County DA

Fresno’s new district attorney will officially begin work Tuesday morning. <br /><br />Lisa Sondergaard Smittcamp was sworn in Monday evening, January 5th.<br /><br />It’s the first time in twelve years that Fresno county has a D.A. Not named ‘Elizabeth Egan.'<br /><br />Smittcamp beat Egan in a hotly contested race in November.<br /><br />Smittcamp is one of several new faces in Fresno county leadership. Two new supervisors were sworn in Monday as well.<br /><br />And many are expecting to see big changes in the District Attorney’s office with Sondergaard Smittcamp’s arrival.<br /><br />Lisa Sondergaard Smittcamp was sworn in in front of family and friends, and hundreds of members of the justice system in Fresno County. It was standing room only. Judges, attorneys, mayors, and police chiefs from several cities – all there to support her.<br /><br />Smittcamp started to prepare for the job the morning after the election.<br /><br />&quot;We have had a great transition period and we’re ready to go to work,&quot; Sondergaard Smittcamp said.<br /><br />She says her first priority is to boost morale in the district attorney’s office. And stop the turnover. Many experienced attorneys left under her predecessor. <br /><br />&quot;I think I have a reputation of being a roll your sleeves up and get in the dirt worker, and we’re just going to continue that type of mentality where we’re going to work as a team,&quot; Sondergaard Smittcamp said.<br /><br />Employee morale was one of the issues that came up during the campaign and one of the reasons Sondergaard Smittcamp said she ran for the office.<br /><br />Incumbent Elizabeth Egan was criticized for how she ran the DA’s and the departure of seasoned prosecutors.<br /><br />Sondergaard Smittcamp is one of several new faces in Fresno county leadership.<br /><br />&quot;We’ve got five new department heads, we have two new supervisors on the board and a new DA. When you put it all together there’s a lot of new blood coming into Fresno county leadership,&quot; said Supervisor Andreas Borgeas.<br /><br />Sondergaard Smittcamp has the support of Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.<br /><br />&quot;I know she is strong enough and courageous enough that she’ll always do the right thing for the right reason regardless of the political pressure that may be out there,&quot; Dyer said.<br /><br />Sondergaard Smittcamp says she wants to work with the board of supervisors to increase funding for all areas of the justice system, including the D.A.’s office and the Public Defenders office, to speed up the judicial process and get faster resolution for cases, and for victims and their families.<br /></div>
