Two flu related deaths in Fresno County

This flu season turns deadly in Fresno County, two men in their 40’s and 50’s died recently because of the flu. County Health Department spokesperson, David Luchini said they both had chronic medical conditions, one is unknown on vaccine status and the other did not get the vaccine.

Since October 2014, ten people were in the intensive care unit, one still remains hospitalized.
Luchini believes this serves as a reminder that although most people who get the flu have mild to moderate illness and recover, it can also cause death

Barbara Mechsner gets the flu vaccine every year and said she’s surprised to hear that but understands the flu virus is changing and it can affect people differently so she’d rather be safe than sorry but there are others who simply don’t believe in it.

Hugo Mejia doesn’t get the flu vaccine and said "You are putting a flu virus into your body, I just don’t buy into everything that’s out there."

Luchini said the flu vaccine is about 23 percent effective and still the best way to protect yourself and your family and there are steps you can take to avoid spreading the illness like coughing into your elbows, staying home if you are ill and not sending children to school if they have flu symptoms.
