Undocumented Immigrants Prepare to Get a Drivers License

The California Department of Motor Vehicles will start allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for a drivers license starting January 2nd.

Drivers like Diego Colli can now go to work with peace of mind. He’s been driving to work for 12 years without a license.

"Exciting that you’re not going to be afraid when you see a cop behind you. Thinking about it if it happens what’s going to happen. How am I going to feed my family. It’s more important to feed my family than to pay a ticket," Colli said.

1.4 million people are expected to apply for a license because of the new laws. So many people the DMV has hired 900 new employees.

"I think we as a society should feel more safe not less safe by having license drivers on the road because that means they’re insured," Charles Magill, an attorney said.

Those who apply will still have to pass a written test, vision exam and driving test. Undocumented immigrants will also have to provide proof of their identity and California Residency.

"There’s often obstacles in those cases where someone is separated from their parents very young or had no birth certificate or identity documents from their home country," Attorney Jessica Smith Bobadilla said. "I think those cases will get very complicated."

Bobadilla says applicants should be aware of scams. The costs of a drivers license is $33 and should no be paid to anyone other than the DMV.

"Anyone who is saying they can expedite or get you first in line that wants to charge you a fee is probably not telling you the truth," Bobadilla said.
