Verdict in 'American Sniper' Trial

The verdict is in for the man accused of killing ‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle and his friend. Eddie Ray Routh was found guilty of capital murder.<br /><br />A Texas jury of ten women and two men found Routh guilty of murdering Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield.<br /><br />The trial comes after Kyle’s best-selling book was made into an Academy Award-nominated blockbuster film. The movie documents Kyle’s life as a Navy SEAL who served four tours in Iraq and became known for his accuracy as a marksman.<br /><br />Eyewitness News brought you the verdict live when a jury found Eddie Ray Routh guilty of capital murder for the deaths of Chris Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield.<br /><br />There was no question that Routh shot and killed the &quot;American Sniper&quot; author and his friend at a Texas gun range two years ago. <br />But Routh’s lawyers tried to convince the jury he was not guilty by reason of insanity. <br /><br />Defense attorney Charles Magill says Texas has some of the toughest requirements to prove not guilty by reason of insanity.<br /><br />&quot;In Texas you have to prove that you didn’t know what you were doing was wrong,&quot; Magill said.<br /><br />During the trial, prosecutors had painted Routh as a troubled ex-Marine who suffered from the effects of alcohol and marijuana abuse – not from serious mental illness. <br /><br />THe movie based on kyle’s book – american sniper – included his struggles with PTSD and his death. which gave local movie goers a connection to the trial they might otherwise have not had.<br /><br />&quot;He was trying to do a good thing. He suffered so much once he got out of the service with post traumatic stress disorder and the rest of his life he used to try to help other people so it’s really unfortunate it ended up the way that it did because he was trying to help this person,&quot; said movie-goer David Babers, who watched ‘American Sniper.'<br /><br />&quot;I don’t know how somebody could do that to someone who’s trying to offer you help,&quot; said another movie-goer, also named David, who did not want to give his last name.<br /><br />Chris Kyle’s widow was not in the court room for the verdict. Court watchers say Eddie Ray Routh had no reaction in the court even when Chad Littlefield’s family addressed him.<br /></div>
