We Are Fresno: A Fresno Fire Captain is retiring

Fresno Fire will soon say goodbye to an old friend. Captain Michael Gill is retiring after more than 30 years with the department.

Fresno Fire Captain Michael Gill never planned on fire fighting, but in only months he’ll retire after more than thirty years with Fresno Fire.

“Yeah, it’s 34 shifts,” Gill says. It’s a tough job physically and emotionally. “If it’s on the evening news, we’ve been there. That’s the bottom line, if it’s been crazy, we’ve been there.”

The crew works 48 hour shifts and is trained to drop everything when the alarm rings.

“Whether it be a cardiac arrest, or a fire call, we get out there, and we know what job that we have to do, and we get it done,” Michael McIntyre, firefighter, said.
