13 Students Share with Clovis PD Ways to Better Improve Community

A little more than a dozen 6th graders from Clovis Unified Elementary Schools were picked out of a group of a thousand students to be asked the question, "What would you do if you were the police chief for a day"?

Their answers caught the attention of Clovis Police Chief Matt Basgall. Police department personnel judged nearly 1,000 essays based upon inventiveness, written communication skills, understanding of the community and the challenges law enforcement faces.

Isaac Castro-Polanco from Jefferson Elementary said for him, safety begins on the roads.

"I would be more undercover police because when people see police cars, they put their phones down. But, when they’re not, when police cars aren’t around them, they take out their phones to start texting and being on the phone," said Castro-Polanco.

Gettysburg Elementary student Ava Barajas said if she were chief, "There would be programs where kids could go after school to do sports or do something, so they weren’t by themselves where they could get into danger."

Clovis Police said the students have also suggested ideas to better combat bullying in school, even tackling heavier topics like Prop 47.

Basgall said, "Their essays and the written work shows a lot of inspiration and definitely gives a bright future to our kids."

Police said they hope the students continue to share their ideas and communicate with their parents the importance of public safety.
