500 tons of hay burning in Tulare County

On Tuesday night smoke and fire could be seen out in the distance on a farm in Tulare County near Highway 198 and road 56. The fire is burning 500 tons of hay and firefighters say it may take a few days for the fire to burn out.

Firefighters tell me the call came in at around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night and they’ve been working ever since to contain the fire to 500 tons of hay.

Surrounding the bales of hay are two large mounds containing 5,000 tons of silage covered with plastic and tires.

Firefighters are on those mounds right now making sure to keep that silage and plastic from burning.

First responders believe they have the situation under control and say nobody is hurt.

Investigators believe the fire started by spontaneous combustion.
