Abandoned Pit Bull Puppy Expected To Survive

His name means warrior.

"Every breath is a miracle. Every little stride that he makes to act like a normal puppy, we’re hopeful," Fresno Bully Rescue Board Member Becky Holly said.

This 4 week old pit bull is named Gideon. He was found Monday abandoned in a field in Madera County with his five brothers and sisters. Gideon was the only brought in alive.

"He was so dehydrated that fluids for even the first day weren’t taking effect yet," Holly said.

With the odds stacked against him, Gideon made it through his first two nights. Today, already walking and even playing, Gideon has an 80 percent chance of survival.

"He’s a lot more comfortable, a lot more alert, a lot more mobile. He’s not right now, but he’s been trying to run around, so that’s a good sign," Holly said.

Abandoned animals are not uncommon in Fresno County. Walter Salvari with Central California SPCA says they see them every day.

"It’s a very sad reality that people still just leave them out in the county, in the yard, in boxes or bags, and it’s something people should not do," Salvari said.

Meet bumper. This bull dog boxer pit mix was found left in an empty apartment. Salvari says abandoning animals is a crime, and lately, it’s been on the rise.

"During the summer when the heat starts rising and our pets want to breed, we start seeing a lot of puppies and kittens," Salvari said.

He says pet owners have so many other options besides abandonment.

"Don’t just leave them out there. Don’t just tie them to a tree and expect someone else to deal with it. The best thing for the pet to do is bring them on down here," Salvari said.

"There’s always another option. You don’t want them to suffer," Holly said.

Doctors hope Gideon will be taken off IV in the next day or so, and he should be rid of his parasites in the next few weeks, but they say there may be deficits in his vision.

Madera County Animal Control Officers are investigating Gideon’s abandonment. Holly says the person could be facing misdemeanor abandonment charges.
