This may seem like a fun way to spend the day. Taking an art class from real artists. But it’s much more than an art lesson. It’s therapy and the women participating have one thing in common- they’re breast cancer patients and survivors.
The Art of Life program is an annual event. Local artists help participants express themselves on canvas. The theme this year is flourish. Fresno artist Karlene Ryan offered her home and her artistic examples for this session. But each woman created her own piece and unique message. Ryan says, "I chose a floral theme to go with that because we know in nature flowers, trees flourish with sunshine, water and tender loving care."
Cancer survivor Nancy Farr put a lot of thought into her message. She says, " My message is that we shape our lives and our future by what we love and what we’re interested in and all our stories matter to everybody. it makes you think of what you need to do to carry on in your life and treat yourself better and be closer to your family and friends."
the finished product: four beautiful florals with four beautiful messages. A time to have some fun, get creative, and think about something other than cancer and that’s the best kind of therapy of all.
