As Temps Begin to Climb, a Reminder to Never Leave Children in Car

You might have noticed that temps in the Central Valley have gone up quite a bit. We haven’t reached the 90’s, but we are feeling the heat across the valley, and the weekend could see the hottest day we’ve seen thus far.

Leah Welch is the Director of Early Care and Education Services at the Central Valley Children’s Services Network said, "We do have to monitor the heat and air quality."

In the early afternoon on Thursday, the kids at the CSN Daycare in Sanger take their naps, while the adults like Welch figure out if it’s too hot for the children to continue the rest of the day outside.

"We kind of monitor the day and try to come out earlier in the day because the heat usually subsides in the afternoon," said Welch.

Welch said that will be the routine for CSN on Friday, as well, as the Valley prepares for temps to reach the high 90’s.

Meteorologist Justin Sacher said, "We are going to see temperatures get warmer and warmer and warmer. It’s going to be perhaps the first triple digit of 2015, with 100 degrees on Saturday."

Sacher said on top of staying hydrated and lathering up on sunscreen, people need to remember to take their pets and children out of the car immediately.

"Always we see a really awful story about the things that happen in just a few minutes with the car, even with the windows cracked," said Sacher.

Welch said they constantly remind their parents too about the deadly dangers of leaving children in the car during the hot summer months.

She said, "We also touch upon the heat danger of leaving children in the car and how children usually run warmer than adults, so if they’re left in a car, it escalates. The heat escalates for them."

Fresno Police said a person can face misdemeanor of felony child endangerment charges if they leave a child in the car.
