Central Valley ‘Hot Shots’ Headed to Puerto Rico

A group of Central Valley ‘Hot Shot’ firefighters are getting ready to head to Puerto Rico to help that island after hurricane Maria. The Madera County-based crew is being asked to help clear trees and other debris that are still clogging roads across the island. Crane Valley Hot Shot Captain Matt Dunlap says they have experience with the dangerous and potentially deadly task of clearing the tangled wreckage. “Really, what I believe they are bringing us out there for is our expertise in chainsaw operation. We operate chainsaws when we are fighting fire against either bucking or falling trees. We train heavily in that,” Dunlap says. The crews will work to clear what they call ‘Jack Straw’ which is when fallen trees become dangerously entangled with other vegetation. The crew could be there as long as a month. They are joining two other crews based out of Southern California.
