Chase Ends In Deputy Involved Shooting In Tulare

Ian Kielty heard about the shooting through a panicked call from his wife.

"She thought it could’ve been me," Kielty said.

Kielty says his wife woke up around 3:00 Wednesday morning to shots outside their home.

"There was like 30 cop cars, undercover, unmarked, black and white, everything," Kielty said.

But only one of those cars was actually involved. Tulare police say a 34-year old man from Tulare was behind the wheel of a blue truck and driving recklessly in Visalia, when a Sheriffs County Deputy tried to pull him over.

"A pursuit was then initiated," Tulare Police Sgt. Andrew Garcia said.

The deputy chased the driver for about 7 miles from Visalia, and stopped on Cartmill Ave. in Tulare, but it didn’t stop there.

"Utilized his vehicle as a deadly weapon and rammed the Tulare County Sheriffs vehicle in his attempt to flee," Garcia said.

Sgt. Andrew Garcia says the deputy, fearful for his safety, then fired shots at the driver. Whether the driver was armed or not has not yet been released, but Garcia says he was using the truck as a deadly weapon.

"It permits the officer to use force reasonably necessary," Garcia said.

The Sheriffs Office was set to investigate the deputy involved shooting, but Garcia says now Tulare Police will be handling both the criminal and deputy investigations. That deputy, a 6 year veteran, was not injured, and has been placed on administrative leave.

Identities of the officer or suspect have not yet been released. That suspect is now in stable condition with non-life threatening injures at Kaweah Delta. Police say he could be facing charges ranging from assault with the deadly weapon to attempted murder.
