Diabetes, Obesity, Hypertension & Severe COVID-19: Virus Update For Aug. 10-14

After announcing that a data snafu had resulted in an undercount of thousands of new COVID-19 cases, state health officials said this week the problem’s been resolved—at least at the state level. County health departments are left to clean up the data that feeds into their own county dashboards. Plus: What do we know about who’s most at risk of severe infection from the virus, on a global scale but also in our local communities? This week’s COVID-19 update explores the most common conditions that appear alongside a severe bout of the virus, with a close look at Fresno County’s mortality data. A snapshot for Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, and Tulare Counties (note that some numbers may have changed between the interview and publication): As of August 13: 796 deaths out of 71,119 cases; 701 people hospitalized and 169 in ICUs As of August 6: 675 deaths out of 60,344 cases ; 846 people hospitalized and 178 in ICUs In the last week, 121 people in our coverage area succumbed
