EXCLUSIVE: ‘Star Trek’ Actress Grace Lee Whitney Dies in Coarsegold Home at 85, Son Shares Final Memories

The actress who played Yeoman Janice Rand in the hit original series Star trek has died, according to her family.

The family of 85-year old Grace Lee Whitney said the actress died on Friday of apparent natural causes in her home in Coarsegold.

Though most of the world will remember Whitney for her role in Star Trek, her youngest son, Jonathan Dweck explained to us in an exclusive interview on Sunday, that his mother’s legacy perhaps surpasses the hills of Hollywood, on over to the foothills of the Central Valley.

"She dedicated her life to helping others, as well as herself, along the path of a 35-year mission," said Dweck. "I’m so proud of my mother. And when I do cry, it’s tears of joy at what a wonderful person she was. How dedicated she was and how transparent she was with people," he added.

Always open and honest, the actress admitted when she was 50-years old, that she was an alcoholic.

Dweck said, "She bottomed out. And she went into a 12-step program, by the grace of God, like she always has said."

Whitney used her notoriety and fame to shed light on the disease. Dweck said she spent the last 35 years of her life talking to members of Alcoholics Anonymous and inspiring thousands of others who found recovery from addiction.

Dweck said his mother also loved her fans very much, often attending Star Trek conventions in the United States and around the world.

"She used this table and addressed letters to her adoring fans. And she did that right up to the other day," explained Dweck as he gave a tour of his mother’s home.

Dweck said though he mourns the loss of his mother, he finds peace in the great work she has done.

He said, "Her spirit is here and I know she’s in a wonderful place right now with the Lord."

Whitney is survived by her two sons and two grandchildren.
