Fire Fighters Rescue “Timmy” the Puppy From A Well

A puppy is recovering after he was rescued from a well.

The story started to unfold Tuesday afternoon at a home on Grant and Willow in Fresno.

It wasn’t a typical call for fire fighters. A puppy stuck 50 feet down a pipe for an old well. The fire fighters used their training, skills, and some creativity to get the puppy out safely.

Fresno fire fighters huddled around an eight inch hole in the ground.
Down below, a puppy named Timmy was trapped.

"He is technically 50 feet down," said a fire fighter.

The six-week-old German Shepherd mix had fallen down the pipe to an old well.
The trick – to get a make-shift harness around Timmy – and get him out.

"Don’t shake buddy, don’t shake, don’t shake," a fire fighter called to Timmy, as the fire fighter gently pulled the rope up from the well.

After several attempts – success.

"Oh we got him, we got him!" the fire fighters cheered. "Little trouble maker," teased one of the rescuers as he held Timmy up. The dog’s owners applauded.

"We just used one of our utility ropes and made a loop on the end and just tried to get it around the puppy in the right way," said Pete Martinez, with the Fresno Fire Department.

Fire fighters snapped a quick picture with Timmy, before they handed him over to his owner, 12-year-old Teresa.

"I was like, how did he get in there? Because there was cardboard with a brick on top," Teresa said.

We spoke with her after the rescue. She said the opening to the well had been covered.
She thinks Timmy may have fallen into the hole some time overnight. She couldn’t find him when she got up in the morning.

"This morning when I was going to school, I heard him. But I thought they were playing and that they were ok in the garage. But they weren’t," Teresa said.

And when Teresa returned home from school, fire fighters were at the house. To the rescue.
Her aunt had found Timmy and called for help.

"I was just hoping the fire fighters didn’t give up on him," said Bertha Torres, Teresa’s aunt.

And they didn’t. As a result, a little girl and her dog are reunited. And looking forward to growing up – together.

Timmy is eating, drinking, and playing. He seems to be a bit sore on one of his hind legs.

And the opening to the well is covered up. The property manager sealed it so this doesn’t happen again.
