Firefighters Battle Two-Alarm House Fire in Southeast Fresno

Fresno firefighters battled a two-alarm house fire in the 4600 block of Illinois Street near Chestnut Avenue in southeast Fresno Monday afternoon.

The fire started around in the attic around 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.

It was called in as a two-alarm fire to extra support because it’s been a busy shift for Fresno firefighters and because of the heat. Firefighters temporarily suspended responding to medical calls for aid.

No one was hurt in the fire. Two people were inside the home at the time, but they were able to make it out safely on their own.

The firefighters on scene were on the second day of their 48 hour shift, a very busy one with Sunday’s three-alarm commercial fire in downtown Fresno.

Additionally, firefighters were dealing with temperatures near 100 degrees, making it even more hazardous for them.

"This is our third working structure fire today. And along with yesterday’s fire, these fire crews have been really taxed. Those are all residential, commercial fires. They’ve still been battling medical calls as well as grass fires," said Pete Martinez, public information officer with the Fresno Fire Department.

Around the same time, firefighters were also battling another house fire at White and Helm also in southeast Fresno.

Volunteers from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) were also on scene to provide crews with water and snacks to help firefighter recover.
