The Fresno City Council on Thursday approved Chief Jerry Dyer’s request to move forward with a three-year, $450,000 contract with ShotSpotter, Inc., a company that will provide gunshot detection devices to the city.

Dyer said close to 50 acoustic devices are going to be installed across a three-square mile area of a crime-ridden part of Fresno. He said the acoustic device will be about the size of a football- and it’s all in an effort to make the City safer.

"Neighborhoods that have a high concentration of gangs, as well as a history of gunfire within those areas," said Dyer, in regards to what area the ShotSpotter will be installed.

Dyer said the program will be paid for by CalGRIP grant program.

Dyer said, "What the gun shot detection does, it is automatically analyzed to make sure that it is gun shot and not fireworks or not backfire from a car. And then, that alert is being sent immediately to patrol cars, to dispatch consul, and to our real time crime center."

Dyer said he doesn’t want to be specific about telling the public exactly where they’re going to be installing the ShotSpotters, because he doesn’t want criminals to interfere with them. But, he said it’s going to be installed on poles and on buildings. Dyer added that the ShotSpotters are going to be very discreet, so you’ll barely know that they’re there.

Dyer said the microphone devices will allow officers to head to a scene faster, and it will give them information like how many gun shots were fired and exactly where it came from.

Expect these devices to be installed by this August.
