Fresno Residents Ignore Drought Water Restrictions

With rain on the way that means a new water conservation rule will be put to the test for the first time. It is now illegal to run your sprinklers for 48 hours after measurable rain. It’s just one of Governor Brown’s new statewide mandates to save water, but in Fresno city leaders are learning that making rules and following them are two different things.

Reading water meters city crews say on a given day at least 14,000 people are not following water restrictions and at least 3,000 people are watering their yards every single day.

"we’re going to reach out just to see if there is anything we can do just to help them understand just how serious this problem is, but fines are going to be part of it and there’s even some talk right now about increasing, or extending the severity of those fines," said City of Fresno Director of Communications Mark Standriff.

Water consumption city wide is down over the last five years, but city leaders say too many people are breaking the rules. Violators of water restrictions in Fresno face a $ 45 fine. Repeat offenders could even have their water shut off.
