Fresno residents voice concerns over High-Speed Rail

Dozens of residents showed up for a public hearing on the high-speed rail and how it could impact Fresno’s historic Chinatown. The group “Chinatown Revitalization” says a tunnel runs from the old Del Monte building underneath Tulare, parallel to G Street.

They voiced their concerns at last night’s final high-speed rail meeting, held at Rio Vista Middle School in Northwest Fresno. Many at the meeting say Chinatown will never be the same because of the high-speed rail.

The Chinatown revitalization board says businesses and residents are frustrated because construction plans keep changing. Rail opponents say the historic tunnels under Chinatown will be ruined by the project.

Construction on portions of the first stretch of high-speed rail between Fresno and Madera is set to begin early next year.
