Fresno State's Mascot Dies

Fresno State mascot Victor E. Bulldog II died from a bee sting Thursday.

"He was the face of Fresno State in so many ways. He was the guy who loved coming to big games. He was a dog that knew when it was a big event and he loved people," Paul Ladwig with Fresno State Athletics said.

The dog was introduced in 2012 after Victor E. Bulldog I passed away.

Veterinarians says the nearly three-year-old pup died immediately from a bee sting after being let outside around noon.

"Dr. Weaver had just gone out to move her trash cans and literally came back within a minute and a half or two minutes and he was already in full blown shock," Dr. Chris Dobbins with Fresno Pet ER said.

Victor E. Has had bad reactions to bees in the past. So many that his caretaker Dr. Kelly Weaver has medication to treat him for his bee allergy.

"We want to make sure people take that kind of condition seriously and don’t think oh I can wait till morning if he’s still vomiting by then or he’s not perked up. They need to get treated immediately," Dobbins said.

With spring conditions, bees are rampant and it is common for dogs to get stung. Fresno Pet ER has been seeing two cases of anaphylactic shock a day.

Rudy Rendon’s dog ‘Allie’ was one of those patients Tuesday.

"Within half an hour she had thrown up and I realized her face was really really swollen," Rendon said.

Allie was given an antihistamine and was treated over night. She is recovering.

When Rendon heard the news about Victor E. Passing, he realized how close he was to losing his dog.

"I’ve gone out there both times to make sure she doesn’t get into anything that could get her into trouble again. Especially with spring now there’s just bees everywhere," Rendon said.
