Dozens of people in the valley joined a nationwide effort to stop anti-immigrant attacks on programs that help undocumented students and parents of U.S citizens.
Undocumented immigrants have repeatedly said all they want is to be able to obtain an education, a career and contribute to society but without an immigration reform or programs known as "DAPA" and "DACA," it’s become more difficult.
"We should be standing unified against creating second class societies within our country and until we can get rid of those statuses, we will never be fully equal," City Council member Oliver Baines said.
Fresno community members are calling on the 26 governors to drop the lawsuit currently blocking implementation of "DAPA" and stop what they call unprecedented political attacks against immigrant communities.
Samuel Molina said "Right now those programs are tied up in litigation because of the injunction that was made by the Texas court on February 16th."
"DAPA" is the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and lawful permanent residents and was supposed to be implemented tomorrow but 26 states in the nation opposed it.
"We have people that really want citizenship status that aren’t afforded an opportunity, until that happens we will take these steps to get there," Baines said. Although he believes "DAPA" is just a band aid for a much bigger issue, they are fully supporting it and demanding it be approved now.
