Kids Talk High Speed Rail

Freshman at Fresno High School heard from the High Speed Rail Authority and Supervisor Henry Perea today as part of their final project. Students from the Pathways Engineering program are looking into how the High Speed Rail will impact their community.

These high school freshman will be in their late twenties when the project is scheduled to be completed. Fresno High School principal John Forbes says the project brings together science and English.

"They are looking at different view points use evidence to support their claims and then analyze facts," said Forbes.

The students came up with questions based on research they have done throughout the school year. Adriana Flores says she will be writing an essay about the high speed rail based on her own opinion. One student we spoke to said he feels there was something missing from the presentation.

"I thought there should have been people that were anti-high speed rail so we could get more of the whole picture," said Fresno High freshman Cameron Carnahan.

Principal John Forbes says the assignment requires the children to look at both sides of the project.

Supervisor Perea says it is important for those who will be making decisions in the future to get informed.

"As voters and tax payers at that point in time they will be making decisions about the cost of a high speed rail system that goes across the country and how much we should or shouldn’t pay for it with tax payer dollars," said Perea.

Principal Forbes says he felt today’s event was well balanced and answered questions about the project fairly.
