Local Organizations React to Supreme Court Marriage Decision

Two years ago california lawmakers legalized gay marriage. Now with the supreme courts decision, everyone across the country has those same rights.

Chris Jarvis, president of "Gay Central Valley" says he’s thrilled that friends in neighboring states can also now get married. Jarvis says, "we’ve been working on this for 11 years, the first state that granted marriage equality was in 2004, so we’ve gone from zero to 50 states in 11 years".

Reasons why many stepped out to celebrate, donning everything from colorful t-shirts, to rainbow bracelets. They say to celebrate love.

Karen Adell Scot, founder of TransCare.org says, "a human’s a human’s a human and love is love is love and so I think that’s the big lesson to be taken from today, it’s so interesting that so many people are worried and afraid, but they’ll see that not a whole lot is going to change".

"Overall I think the community or the country I should say is really excited about this", says Gay Central Valley board member Paul Hernandez.

"Many of my friends have been together for over 20 years and so they’ve already shown how committed they are to their relationship so why can’t they get married", says Jena Adams.

While some are definitely excited about the ruling. Others like pastor Jim Franklin with Cornerstone Church are not too thrilled. "Now we’ve got 5 justices, 5 individuals in black robes that have decided to make a decision that affects millions across America, only in the United States by vote of those people of legislature voted to legalize gay marriage", says pastor Franklin.

Jarvis says there is still a lot of work that has to be done, before all rights are truly equal. He says, "now it makes the other battles that we’re going to fight, like immigration, like transgender rights, housing, employment, it makes that a little easier because we’ve already been granted these equal rights by the government".
