Man Arrested For Allegedly Shooting At Girlfriend

This morning dozens of Madera County officers surrounded a home behind Red Top Café making several attempts to get 26 year old Rodrigo Vecerra Fernandez out of his home. They say he was in a domestic dispute in Merced in which a female believed to be his girlfriend was involved.

"There was a firearm used, there were shots there. Other folks told us the gentleman involved does tend to carry a firearm with him so we took the safest route by calling out the swat team, Sheriff Jay Varney said. He also said the suspect was unresponsive to any of their attempts and even tried to flee at one point.

His roommates told us they were called out of the home at five in the morning but had no idea what was going on. They felt officers did what they had to do. During the standoff a couple of businesses in the area couldn’t open due to all the police activity, they hoped for a safe surrender.

A little after noon officers used tier gas to get Fernandez out and took him into custody. He was booked into the Merced County Jail and he will be charged with

negligent discharge of a firearm.

"He also has a felony probation warrant for a previous firearms related charge," said Sheriff Varney.

Officers had also been told Fernandez was believed to be under the influence of drugs but they had not confirmed that although they did say he was cooperative when arrested.
