Man In Custody in Suspected DUI, Hit-and-Run that Injured Bicyclist

Police have arrested a man they say was highly intoxicated when he hit and injured a bicyclist, drove away, and hid inside a home in southeast Fresno, according to Sgt. Eddie Barrios with the Fresno Police Department.

It happened after 9 p.m. Friday on Dearing Street and Kings Canyon Road.

The man was rushed to the hospital. Police say the victim was conscious and is stable. He has a broken leg, but the extent of any other injuries are unknown, Barrios says.

"Witnesses provide us information that the suspect vehicle was coming out of Ace Liquor, which is really close to here, at a high rate of speed. They never saw him (the victim) actually get hit–they saw sparks flying. When the car finally cleared,  they saw the body, and they called us," Barrios says.

Police say the suspect hit the bicyclist and knocked him off his bike, dragged the bike underneath his car for a few hundred feet, and then stopped the car in front of his girlfriend’s house. He then ran inside the home and hid in a room, Barrios says.

Police arrived and arrested the suspect. Am ambulance arrived to evaluate the suspect for intoxication.

Barrios says the suspect now faces charges of felony DUI and felony hit-and-run.
