Man Shot and Killed in Apartment Complex in Central Fresno, Family & Children in the Home

A 28-year old Hispanic man was shot and killed in his apartment complex in Central Fresno early Wednesday morning. Fresno Police said the shooting occurred just after 5am near McKinley Avenue and Sixth Street. Investigators said the victim was shot multiple times as he opened up the back door to his home, and he died on-scene.

Lt. Mark Salazar said investigators are working on leads and interviewing multiple family members who were inside of the apartment at the time of the shooting. Investigators are also trying to determine a motive and what led up to this fatal shooting.

Luis Burriel is the manager of the apartment complex where the victim and his family lived. Burriel was abruptly woken up on Wednesday morning by one of his tenants, notifying him of the shooting victim. Burriel immediately rushed over to the unit where the shooting took place.

Burriel didn’t want to share the victim’s name, but said he’s shocked over the killing.

"I can’t imagine anybody trying to hurt him because he’s a very gentle person that speaks with a very kind voice. And always, 3-4 times a day, anytime anywhere, he’ll wave "Hi" and smile," said Burriel.

But all smiles are now gone. Burriel described a chaotic crime scene. He said there were children in the unit, and the victim’s partner was hysterical.

He said, "She said that her boyfriend or husband had been shot several times upon opening the door, answering the back door. And she indicated that he might have been shot in the face several times."

Salazar said, "[We’re] finding out a profile on the person, any disputes, there might be an interpersonal dispute that was going on prior to the shooting, so we’re looking into that right now."

Burriel said he takes pride on running a safe complex, and worries his tenants may not feel safe anymore.

He said, "Even for me, "I’m afraid to answer my door now. Do I answer the door with a gun? Or do I look through the window?"
