New VA Benefit Process Targets Immense Backlog

Veterans typically have to wait years for the VA to process their claims for disability benefits. A new law is aiming to help clear away the immense backlog. A group of vets recently gathered at an American Legion Post in San Diego to talk about their sometimes frustrating relationship with the Department of Veterans Affairs benefits system. Sam Flores is the post’s vice commander. After 13 years in the Marine Corps, he was medically retired in 2010 after being injured by a blast from an IED, or improvised explosive device, in Afghanistan. “I was in the back of a vehicle and next thing I knew, I was outside of a vehicle,” Flores said. “It was pretty drastic.” Six people in the convoy died. Flores is still undergoing treatment. Even obvious cases where a veteran is injured in combat can take years to resolve. The vet has to prove their disability is tied to their military service. The VA then has a complex system for rating how disabled the veteran is. The veteran can appeal the rating.
