The Camp House Fire began on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m. in Ault Township, about two miles northeast of Brimson, Minnesota, within the Superior National Forest. The fire was initially reported at 750 acres and expanded rapidly due to dry conditions, gusty winds, and a large volume of dead timber, particularly in areas infested with spruce budworms. Fire behavior has included crown fires and rapid spread through dense forest, fueled by widespread dead and dying trees.
To date, at least 144 structures—primarily homes and cabins along Highway 44—have been destroyed. Mandatory evacuations remain in place for Highway 44 and nearby communities, with evacuation centers established to assist displaced residents. Fire activity and fallen trees have led to the closure of multiple roads, including sections of Highway 44. Several wooden bridges have been damaged or destroyed, limiting access for firefighting operations. Additionally, smoke from the fire has resulted in air quality alerts across northeastern Minnesota, affecting individuals with respiratory conditions.
The Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team, under the leadership of Incident Commander Brian Jenkins, is overseeing response operations. Deployed resources include engines, bulldozers, tracked vehicles, and aerial assets. Fire suppression efforts are focused on protecting structures, establishing containment lines, and fully suppressing active fire zones.
